Media Madness

Our local paper did an article on Ben today. I was a little anxious about the story before the interview, but it was really well done. Many thanks to Laurel and Erin for doing such a wonderful thing for Ben.

And a local TV station will be attending our "Unbirthday Party" at Chuck E. Cheese's for Ben's classmates this evening. We'll have our Tivo set to record it and I'll work on getting a copy online for you out-of-state folks.

Update:

The video is now online here.

1 - I just read Ben's article. WOW! Today, WE went to Chuck E. Cheese for no reason at all! I just said, "Hey, kids, let's go!" We hadn't been there in over six months! Glad to hear we shared something today! I hope Ben's un-birthday was tons of fun. Cecilia and Sophia won enough tickets to share a roll of Smarties. The best part was that they really liked sharing a roll of Smarties. We all came home happy. Glad to hear our raspberries made you grin.. :)Lots more where that came from! Abby (Comment this)

5 - Just read the article. Awesome.

I just spent the everning with my good friend Steve who has ALS (Lou Gehring's Disease). We talked alot about Ben and the whole family. The struggle with a terminal illness, and the sense of helplessness that can occur. Yet, he has just passed his 5 year anniversary since being diagnosed where there is a 80% mortality rate in the first three years. He says it is because of his family, friends and overwhelming support which keeps him moving and thriving.

I know Ben has the same support and I know this will help him with his fight. Please know that Ben is now part of the prayers of Steve's ALS networks of friends which is over 3000 strong. You all are in our prayers and thoughts always.

13 - My mom recently died as a result of failed conventional treatment for this aggressive form of brain cancer. Chemo and radiation don't seem to be especially effective. There is a possibility for younger patients that was discussed in a recent issue of New Scientist. This is a British science publication that I have had a subscription to or some time now and I find most enjoyable. Ten or weeks ago there was an article published about a therapy that holds great promise and is presently
undergoing the trial stage. This therapy has to do with a genetically modified virus that requires a growth factor found only in tumors of the Glial cells for it's reproductive success. The virus is inserted directly into the tumor where it reproduces madly, devouring the tumor. It then self destructs when it runs out of tumor cells that have the critical growth factor. My mom was too old but it sounds like this young boy might be just right for this trial. The article I mentioned described a young man in his twenty's that had recurrent tumors which were treated successfully and has been cancer free for several years now. If you are unable to locate the reference you would be welcome to
contact me and I will dig through my old pointers and find the reference to the article. Perhaps he would qualify for the trial.

PS
The issue of New Scientist in which the article was published is the November 19-25 2005. The name of the article is My Enemy's Enemy Written by Jo Whelan
If you wouls like me to send you the full text of the article I can scan it and send you an e-mail with it attached.
